Most of us have transitioned to or are transitioning to high-speed NBN. However, even with high-speed NBN, your home’s Wi-Fi may be slower than a sloth at the Melbourne Zoo. Before reaching out to the experienced team at Smart Green Electrical to sort things out, you might want to try some DIY fixes to speed up your slow internet connection.
Diagnosing your slow wi-fi problem
A slow internet connection could stem from a variety of reasons: weak signal, modem/router issues, or wireless channel issues. However, there are some simple things you can do to speed up your slow internet issue.
1/ Restart your modem/router
The old – have you turned it off and on again solution? Give it a go, it may just need a quick update! Once the modem starts back up, reboot the devices you are using the Wi-Fi on so everything is connected.
2/ Connect to the right Wi-Fi
Again, this simple tip can make a big difference. Most modems/routers on the market are dual-band. This means they have two Wi-Fi frequencies you can connect to – one is 2.4 GHz, and one is 5 GHz. Selecting the Wi-Fi name with 5G at the end for the 5 GHz band will ensure you have less interference. However, the 5 GHz band has less range, so you may see your smart device switch to the 2.4 GHz band depending on how far you get from the modem.
3/ Secure your wireless connection
Do you laugh every time your neighbour’s ‘pretty fly for a Wi-Fi’ pops up on your screen? Would you select it if it wasn’t password-protected to save paying for your own internet? If your Wi-Fi isn’t password-protected, anyone can jump on your Wi-Fi and start using your bandwidth, slowing you down. Check your Wi-Fi name has a locked padlock sign beside it to ensure your Wi-Fi is secure.
4/ Optimise your modem/router location
Ideally, your router/modem should be at the centre of your home. Wi-Fi travels out in all directions in a circular shape. If your router/modem is located at the front of your home, you may find it challenging to get a signal on your back deck. Multi-storied homes in Torquay may find it difficult to get strong Wi-Fi signals on the second floor if the modem/router location is not installed in the first-floor ceiling.
5/ Too many devices using your Wi-Fi at the same time
We get it, with many of us working from home along the Surf Coast and Bellarine rather than commuting into the office in Geelong or Melbourne, Wi-Fi can be slower than slow. Not to mention our kids (and let’s be honest, us) are streaming more and more video watching Tik Toks, that epic show on Stan or playing video games well into the wee hours of the night.
If you have numerous smart devices on your slow Wi-Fi, it might be a good idea to add access points for a better Wi-Fi connection.
